Grids and Units used for Astrophysical Opacity Tables


Temperatures, R's and Opacities

The grids used for the astrophysical tables are not quite the same as for the normal opacity web page. That page calculates tables in terms of temperature in keV and density in gm/cc. The astrophysical tables use the same temperature values, but the units have been changed to oK and are expressed as logs. All three temperature grids are displayed in the Temperature Grid table at the bottom of this page. The density has been replaced by the astrophysical paramater R, where R is defined as:
R = rho / T63
where
rho = density in gm/cc
and
T6 = T(oK) / 106
The R's are expressed in terms of logs, just like the temperatures, and both the R values and the logs are given in the R Grid table at the bottom of this page. The Rosseland opacities in the tables are expressed as the log of the opacity, and the units are gm/cm2. A rectangular table in log T and log R is provided to the user for each X-Y-Z combination, but some of the T-R points can not be calculated by the opacity code. The missing points are filled in with the value of 9.999 to provide a filled table.


X, Y, Z Mass Fraction Grids

The data on this web page is organized under general material names, then each material may have several different Z compositions, such as enhanced nitrogen, decreased iron, etc. Each of these different Z compositions (see the Astrophysical Mixture link for details) will then have a set of opacity tables for 12 to more than 150 X-Y-Z combinations. In general, the X's will vary from 0.0 to 1.0, the Z's will vary from 0.0 to 0.1 and Y = 1. - X - Z. The X-Y-Z grids will vary slightly from material to material and are listed for each material on the Astrophysical Mixture link. A sample table is shown at the bottom of this page after the Temperature Grid.
